Intro to HAM Radio

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
September 10, 2024

Week Two – Sep 10
2.1 VHF/UHF repeaters;
What are they for,
How do they work,
Why a frequency split (offset or input/output frequency).
2.2 Repeater listings (phone book);
ARRL Repeater Directory, VHF/FM society on-line listing, Repeaterbook (on line).
2.3 How repeaters are coordinated;
FCC uses ARRL to manage,
ARRL uses area wide groups,
VHF/UHF FM Society in Texas.
2.4 Uncoordinated repeaters;
Not illegal,
Very limited however,
Any interference to a coordinated frequency pair brings regulatory involvement.

2.5 How a new Ham can use VHF/UHF HT, mobile or fixed radios:
Modern radios are largely a computer,
Look at legacy equipment and its simplistic design,
Look at today’s radios and complicated features,
With functionality comes complexity,
Only practical way to program radios and HTs is with a computer aided program and cable.
2.6 How to purchase for your HT or radios (for next week).
